UNGA73 General Debate: The Republic of Moldova demands the Russian Federation to cease its illegal military activities and to withdraw unconditionally and with no further delay its military forces and armaments from the Moldovan territory

On 28 September 2018, speaking before the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister Pavel Filip emphasized the challenges to sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security of the Republic of Moldova.

He highlighted the continued unlawful presence of the Russian military forces and armaments on the territory of the Republic of Moldova as a grave breach of international law and the United Nations Charter.

He welcomed the General Assembly resolution A/72/282 stating the Russian Federation’s non compliance to withdraw its military forces and armaments as a clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

The continual joint military exercises of the Russian Federation’s military forces with the paramilitaries of the unconstitutional power structures, violate the 1992 Moldovan Russian Ceasefire Agreement, he stressed, noting that the increased exercises undermine the national security and the international efforts aimed at the peaceful resolution of the protracted transnistrian problem. In addition, he expressed deep concern that these joint exercises run contrary to the Russian Federation’s obligations in the framework of the “5+2” international settlement format, appealing to Moscow to discontinue those illegal and provocative activities and to resume unconditionally to withdraw its troops in line with the 1999 Istanbul Summit Outcome Document and in accordance with its obligations under the International Law and the UN Charter.
